Ried Hundschupfen / Mailberg / Weinviertel

The market town of Mailberg nestles into a natural basin in a picturesque setting surrounded by mountains. The slopes surrounding Mailberg are planted with terraces – as is the most important and well-known location in Mailberg, Ried Hundschupfen.

On this sandy, loess-covered south-facing slope, the grapes are able to ripen well into autumn thanks to the long hours of sunshine. In addition, the special micro-climate gives the wines a very individual character – in particular the prominent variety of Grüner Veltliner – due to the basin location, which provides shelter from the wind.

Roughly 70 kilometres to the north west of Vienna, near the border with the Czech Republic in a little valley by the name of “Mailberg Valley”, lies the Castle Winery of the Sovereign Maltese Knight Order.

Wine estate manager Norbert Gutmayer has been supervising the wines produced here for over 20 years now, from the work in the vineyard all the way to bottling. The motto is quality over quantity, and the yields per hectare are kept accordingly low in order to harvest especially aromatic, fully ripened grapes.
